Message: First of all, kudos on the discussion board, Becky. I think it's a really good idea. I was wondering if anyone knew the origin of the song "Spring Waters". What did she do this song for, where is it from, was it meant to be released on a certain album but wasn't?

Message: Fedor Tyutchev (1803 - 1873) wrote the original poem, and later Serge Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943) turned it into a song. Sarah performed it live in the mid-eighties, for some european tv show (possibly a Jose Carreras Gala, for German TV), acompanied only by piano. She wore the same red dress she wore at ALW's REQUIEM Mass. It is unknown if she ever made a studio recording of the song.

The original Tyutchev poem was published in english as follows:

VERNAL WATERS

Snow is still white in the fields
but spring is in the water's voice.
Running, the waters wake the sleepy banks.
They run, they glisten, they rejoice.

"Spring is coming, spring is coming!
in every direction they shout.
We're the young spring's runners,
with the news she has sent us out!

Spring is coming, spring is coming!
In a bright, rosy round-dance plays
a frolicking, happy bustle
of May's warm, quiet days.

Fedor Tyutchev

Original russian is as follows (Cyrillic Alphabet compatibility is required):

Весенние воды

Еще в полях белеет снег,
А воды уж весной шумят -
Бегут и будят сонный брег,
Бегут, и блещут, и гласят...

Они гласят во все концы:
"Весна идет, весна идет,
Мы молодой весны гонцы,
Она нас выслала вперед!

Весна идет, весна идет,
И тихих, теплых майских дней
Румяный, светлый хоровод
Толпится весело за ней!.."

Message: I read in an interview with ALW, that Sarah performed this song to show the critics of her voice just how good it was. Andrew said he was also impressed!
